Exclusive Interview with Southern Rock Artist Abbi Scott

Abbi Scott has always had a passion for music. Growing up on traditional country and classic rock legends like Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, Tesla and Motley Crue, Abbi has cultivated her own unique southern-rock sound over the years. She recently released her newest EP, This. Is. Me., featuring an edgier new sound. 

I got the chance to talk to her about how she got started making and performing music, how long it took This. Is. Me. tocome together, what she’s currently nerding out about and so much more! Keep reading to see what she had to say!

Tell me a little bit about how you first got into making and performing music.

I was exposed to music at a very young age. Both of my parents were huge music lovers and always had it playing around the house no matter what genre! My youngest memory with music was simply standing in front of the TV during commercial breaks of American Idol and saying to my family, “Okay, now judge me!”

Was there a specific moment or person that made you realize that music is what you wanted to pursue professionally?

When I was just 7 years old, my very first concert with my dad was Gretchen Wilson and she made me realize how much I loved music. I remember sitting up on my Dad’s shoulders thinking how cool it would be to grow up and perform on a big stage like her.

I’m always genuinely curious about what artists want to convey with their music. If you had to describe it without using genre names, how would you describe it?

I would describe my music as something that makes you feel like you can do anything and be anything you want to be in this world. It’s confident, powerful and lets women know that they are important in this world. It has a sound that makes you wanna get up and dance and lets you feel like you’re at a live show. 

Going off of that, who are some of your musical influences?

My largest influences would have to be Miranda Lambert, Gretchen Wilson, Motley Crue, Lynyrd Skynyrd – and from a songwriters standpoint, Brandy Clark!

Let’s talk about your new EP, This. Is. Me. What was the recording process like for this project? How long did it take for this to come together from start to finish?

This was the best recording process to date for me as an artist. My producer Sal Oliveri was the mastermind behind this EP. We spent several months working on this together in the studio to produce the perfect sound for my fans that finally sounded just how I wanted “Abbi Scott” to sound as an artist.

I love your most recent single “VooDoo”. What inspired this song?

This song was actually written by the incredible artist and songwriter Clare Dunn. My producer, Sal Oliveri, works closely with her and I was so blessed when I was given the opportunity to cut this song! It’s one of my favorite’s on This. Is. Me.

Something I’ve always been curious with songwriting is how topics come to mind. Did you know what you wanted to write about going into the song session that birthed “VooDoo” or did it just come about organically once you were in the session?

Well from being a songwriter of many different songs other than “VooDoo”, each write is a bit different. Sometimes I have ideas flowing with lots of topics, but other times the process is a bit lengthly. I usually always start with composing the lyrics first!

Was there any major changes made to “VooDoo” once you guys got into the recording studio, whether it be in the lyrics or something sonically?

I made hardly any changes at all to “VooDoo” once arriving in the studio; I just loved how it already was built together! Just a few key changes, but that was truly it.

Lastly, we’re called Talk Nerdy With Us because we all have an inner nerd so what is something that you’re currently nerding out about?

I’m a total geek about making my own holistic recipes for everyday personal items use! I’ve been currently working on recipes to make my own “all-natural” deodorant. I consider myself a modern day “hippie” and love everything all natural and good for the environment!
